Over the last decade, exploration on the NCS has been successful for a mature basin.
The Norway State of Exploration report analyses exploration activity and performance between 2016 and 2025, including analysis of basins, plays, hubs, companies and resource progression. During the decade there was progressive shift towards more infrastructure-led exploration, which improved commercial success rates and finding costs, while high impact drilling delivered limited commercial success.
Over the decade, 279 exploration well programmes were drilled at an estimated cost of US$10.0 billion, resulting in 89 commercial discoveries and c. 2.6 bnboe of discovered resource.
