Geophysical direct hydrocarbon indicators are the holy grail of exploration. Explorers have become increasingly reliant on seismic attributes and other geophysical techniques such as EM to define and de-risk prospects. But do they actually work? This report analyses success rates for offshore wells with company-reported direct hydrocarbon indicators, and compares these to average success rates to assess the effectiveness of different types of geophysical support.

A number of wells from the Wildcat database have been selected to highlight successful and unsuccessful company reported DHI wells. Although 2017 drilling activity is forecast to remain relatively low, Westwood has highlighted some planned wells with reported geophysical attribute support as key wells to watch.
